Kansans: Are You Still Filing a Paper Tax Return?

The Kansas Department of Revenue (KDOR) encourages residents to file 2010 Individual Income Tax Returns online with the new version of the easy-to-use Kansas WebFile (https://www.kansas.gov/webfile).

This year, the state is distributing a very limited number of paper income tax forms and booklets to save taxpayer dollars. Online filing through WebFile is secure, fast and paperless, and is the only method through which citizens can have their refunds directly deposited into their bank accounts. Direct deposit refunds may be received in less than one week, with online filers requesting paper checks receiving refunds up to 80 percent quicker than those filing traditional paper forms. In addition, paper filed returns do not qualify for direct deposit refunds.

WebFile was originally launched by the state in 2002. Last year, KDOR received 80 percent of the 1.5 million individual income tax returns electronically, up from 68 percent filed online in 2009.

The 2010 Individual Income Tax Return deadline is April 18, 2011. Save time and file online today at: https://www.kansas.gov/webfile.

Kansas Motor Carriers: Hit “Enter” Then Hit the Road!

Every Kansas-based motor carrier with an International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) license is required to file an IFTA tax return each quarter. Submitting your IFTA Quarterly Tax Returns just got easier thanks to the Kansas Department of Revenue’s Kansas IFTA Quarterly Filings application (https://www.kansas.gov/ifta-quarterly/). Kansas motor carriers with an active Kansas ID and an IFTA license can submit their IFTA Quarterly tax returns online, anytime, without having to take the time to manually fill out paper forms or perform manual calculations on taxes, interest, and penalties. The application also allows motor carriers with an outstanding tax balance to conveniently make payments online (EFT) with an electronic check or print a mail-in payment voucher and pay by check.

“Online filing benefits Kansas-based motor carriers and Kansas Department of Revenue with faster and more efficient processing of returns and refunds,” said Ken Rakestraw, Customer Relations Core Process Manager or the Kansas Department of Revenue. “The carrier enters the total miles and gallons purchased during the quarter, per jurisdiction traveled, and the calculations are automatically calculated. Copies of returns can be easily accessed for free through your online history.”

Built as a part of TruckingKS, the Kansas Department of Revenue’s online trucking permit system, the enhanced Kansas IFTA Quarterly Filings application offers an updated look, as well as improved ability to perform the following:

Change your mailing address
Automatically calculate taxes, interest, and penalties
File the current quarter return on an active account
Access a personal history of any and all Kansas IFTA Quarterly tax filings completed online

The next Quarterly Tax filing deadline is July 31, 2012.
